I was watching Netflix’s short series called “Super Pumped”. For those who haven’t watched it, it is about the rise of Uber and the demise of Uber’s CEO, Travis Kalanick. It dawned on me as I was watching Uber had a toxic work culture, BUT it was consistently toxic. There is a scene where they display the company’s values; they are bold but lack a certain level of delicacy, which is reflected in the company’s culture and lack of balance.
That got me thinking; companies like Virgin, Disney, Amazon, Uber, etc, all have a distinct work culture that is embedded in their values. Look at the images below showing Amazon's and Uber's values. Notice that their values are distinct, unique, and aligned with the company's persona.
Amazon could easily write “Trust,” but they wrote instead “Earn Trust”. Completely different meaning. Uber wrote “Always be Hustlin” instead of “Word Hard”. These slight changes completely change the tone of the company’s values and morals.
Companies dedicate time, money, and attention to these value systems because They serve as a crucial compass during challenges, instilling a unified sense of purpose and transforming the workplace into a thriving community with a shared vision. In essence, a value system becomes the company’s north star toward lasting success.
The way you describe your values to your team impacts your work culture. So many sure your values are beyond the basic definitions, customized, and in the same tonality as the company’s culture and, more importantly, reflect the CEO values.
This is a key aspect to consider; as the leader, you serve as the living embodiment of your company's values. Therefore, it is imperative that you not only articulate the values you expect from your coworkers but also actively show what embodying those values entails. Since this company started with you, any changes must come from you and be an example. Don't forget to be the cheerleader of your team when they follow suit.
